What is the difference between a talent and a spiritual gift?
A talent is a natural ability you are born with or develop; a spiritual gift is a supernatural ability given by the Holy Spirit for the building up of the church. Both are from God, but they differ in origin, purpose, and power. The Spirit may sovereignly fill your natural abilities with supernatural power, and He may give you gifts you never expected.

A talent is natural; a gift is supernatural
Everyone has natural abilities: some are musical, some are administrative, some are good with people. These are real and good, and they come from God's common grace. But a spiritual gift is different in kind. It is the Holy Spirit Himself distributing 'to each one separately as He desires,' giving ability that did not exist before.
But the one and the same Spirit works all of these, distributing to each one separately as he desires.
As each has received a gift, employ it in serving one another, as good managers of the grace of God in its various forms.
Spiritual gifts are for the church, not for personal glory
Peter says, 'As each has received a gift, employ it in serving one another, as good managers of the grace of God in its various forms.' The test of a spiritual gift is not 'does this make me impressive?' but 'does this build up others?' Natural talent can be used for self-promotion; spiritual gifts are always otherward.

So also you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, seek that you may abound to the building up of the assembly.
The Spirit may sovereignly fill your natural abilities
Bezalel was filled with the Spirit for craftsmanship. Luke was a physician and a historian, and the Spirit used both. The Spirit does not discard what you already are; He fills it, transforms it, and uses it for purposes you never imagined.
and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all kinds of workmanship,

Now there are various kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are various kinds of service, and the same Lord. There are various kinds of workings, but the same God, who works all things in all.
The gifts are given, not earned
You cannot study your way into a spiritual gift or earn one through spiritual discipline. The Spirit distributes 'as He desires.' You can ask, and you should, but the gift is His to give. What you can do is be faithful with what He has already given.
But the one and the same Spirit works all of these, distributing to each one separately as he desires.
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow.
“His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things, I will set you over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’
The parable teaches stewardship, not comparison
Jesus said the master gave talents 'to each according to his own ability.' The point was not that one gift was better than another, but that each servant was expected to be faithful with what they received. The one who buried his talent was condemned not for having less, but for doing nothing with what he was given.
“For it is like a man, going into another country, who called his own servants, and entrusted his goods to them. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one; to each according to his own ability. Then he went on his journey. Immediately he who received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. In the same way, he also who got the two gained another two. But he who received the one went away and dug in the earth, and hid his lord’s money. “Now after a long time the lord of those servants came, and reconciled accounts with them. He who received the five talents came and brought another five talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents. Behold, I have gained another five talents besides them.’ “His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things, I will set you over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ “He also who got the two talents came and said, ‘Lord, you delivered to me two talents.
