What does Peter say about Peter?
Peter's own letters and history show a man who consistently pointed away from himself. He confessed Jesus as the Christ, needed correction himself, refused worship at Cornelius' house, and wrote as a fellow elder telling shepherds not to domineer. Read him closely and he keeps handing the spotlight back to his Lord.

The rock was the confession
When Peter said, 'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God,' Jesus blessed him and said, 'on this rock I will build my assembly.' The New Testament sings that same note everywhere: no other foundation can anyone lay than Jesus Christ Himself. Peter is the first stone in a building whose cornerstone and foundation is his Lord, and he says so in his own letter: coming to the Living Stone, we are built up as living stones.
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. I also tell you that you are Peter,and on this rock I will build my assembly, and the gates of Hadeswill not prevail against it.
For no one can lay any other foundation than that which has been laid, which is Jesus Christ.
coming to him, a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God, precious. You also, as living stones, are built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
A pillar who needed correcting
Peter was wrong at Antioch, and Paul resisted him to his face because he stood condemned: the leading apostle compromised the truth of the gospel under social pressure. Scripture records it without embarrassment, which tells us something: no apostle, however honored, stood above correction by the truth, and Peter himself received the correction.
But when Peter came to Antioch, I resisted him to his face, because he stood condemned. For before some people came from James, he ate with the Gentiles. But when they came, he drew back and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision. And the rest of the Jews joined him in his hypocrisy; so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy. But when I saw that they didn’t walk uprightly according to the truth of the Good News, I said to Peter before them all, “If you, being a Jew, live as the Gentiles do, and not as the Jews do, why do you compel the Gentiles to live as the Jews do?
From that time, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up. Peter took him aside, and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This will never be done to you.” But he turned, and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me, for you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of men.”
Refusing the worship due to God alone
Twice Scripture shows Peter declining veneration. When Cornelius fell at his feet, Peter lifted him up, saying, 'Stand up! I myself am also a man.' And after the lame man was healed he asked the marveling crowd, why do you gaze at us, as though by our own power or godliness we made him walk? Men whose eyes were fixed on Jesus could not bear to receive what belongs to Him alone.
When Peter entered, Cornelius met him, fell down at his feet, and worshiped him. But Peter raised him up, saying, “Stand up! I myself am also a man.”
When Peter saw it, he responded to the people, “You men of Israel, why do you marvel at this man? Why do you fasten your eyes on us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made him walk? The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his Servant Jesus, whom you delivered up, and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had determined to release him.
Then Jesus said to him, “Get behind me,Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and you shall serve him only.’”
Fellow elder, clothed with humility
Peter's parting instruction to church leadership is drawn from his own resume of failure and grace: 'I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder,' shepherd the flock, not lording it over those entrusted to you, and all of you bind on humility toward one another, because God resists the proud. The man some would later crown spent his letters insisting he was a brother among shepherds.
I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and who will also share in the glory that will be revealed. Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, exercising the oversight, not under compulsion, but voluntarily, not for dishonest gain, but willingly; neither as lording it over those entrusted to you, but making yourselves examples to the flock. When the chief Shepherd is revealed, you will receive the crown of glory that doesn’t fade away.
Likewise, you younger ones, be subject to the elder. Yes, all of you clothe yourselves with humility, to subject yourselves to one another; for “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
So when they had eaten their breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I have affection for you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I have affection for you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you have affection for me?” Peter was grieved because he asked him the third time, “Do you have affection for me?” He said to him, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I have affection for you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.
