What is the difference between testing and temptation?
Scripture uses related but distinct words: testing is what God allows to prove and strengthen us, while temptation is the enticement to sin, which never comes from God. James makes the difference explicit: God tempts no one. The same difficulty can be, by grace, a test that builds endurance, or, if yielded to, a temptation that becomes sin. We can face trials with joy and resist temptation by relying on God's faithfulness and His way of escape.

Testings build endurance
James sets the frame for trials: 'Count it all joy, my brothers, when you fall into various temptations, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.' The word here is not enticement to sin but a proving. Peter says trials come 'that the proof of your faith... may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.' God allows trials so that our faith, tested, would be shown real and become strong.
Wherein you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been put to grief in various trials,
that the proof of your faith, which is more precious than gold that perishes even though it is tested by fire, may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ—
Temptation entices toward sin
Temptation has the opposite aim. James describes it from the inside: 'each one is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed. Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin; and the sin, when it is full grown, produces death.' Where the test is meant to prove us toward good, temptation is the bait toward evil, and its end, left unmet, is death.

God never tempts, but He does test
James draws the hard line: 'Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted by God, for God can't be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one.' Yet Scripture is equally clear that God tests: 'God tested Abraham,' and Moses recalled how God led Israel through the wilderness 'that he might humble you, to prove you, to know what was in your heart.' The test comes from God's hand for our good; temptation rises from our own desires and the enemy who feeds them.
Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God can’t be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one.
After these things, God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” He said, “Here I am.”

A hardship is not automatically one or the other; it becomes what we do with it. Peter urges the fiery trial not to be treated as strange, 'to test you' and show faith real. Paul warns that 'no temptation has taken you except what is common to man,' and promises God will not allow beyond what you can bear and will make the way of escape. The enemy turns what God means as a test into an occasion of temptation; God turns even the temptation into a place where His faithfulness is seen.
Beloved, don’t be astonished at the fiery trial which has come upon you, to test you, as though a strange thing happened to you.

So we meet trials with joy and resist temptation
Because a trial is a testing that builds endurance, we can 'count it all joy' and ask for the wisdom to pass through it. Because temptation is enticement to sin, we resist the devil, draw near to God, and trust the way of escape God provides. Abraham, when he was tested, trusted that God could raise even the dead. The trial and the temptation may touch the same moment, but the responses differ: joy and perseverance in the testing, resistance and dependence in the temptation.
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.
