What is the Spirit's role when the church gathers?
He is the host, not an uninvited interruption. The Spirit gives every believer a manifestation for the profit of all, turns a meeting into a body where everyone carries something, and then orders what He builds: not confusion but peace, everything done decently and in order. Spirit-led worship is measured by whether others are built up, not by how it felt in the moment.

The Spirit distributes gifts for the profit of all
Paul's first principle about gifts in the assembly is otherward: 'to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the profit of all.' And the Sovereign over distribution is the Spirit himself, 'distributing to each one separately as he desires.' That means when you walk into a gathered church you are not an audience member; you are carrying something the body needs, placed there deliberately by the Spirit.

Everyone brings something, and building up is the test
Paul describes the Corinthian gathering as participatory at every level: 'When you come together, each one of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation...' followed immediately by the governing rule: 'Let all things be done to build each other up.' Whatever cannot pass that test, however impressive, does not belong. The Spirit's aim in the assembly is never the display of an individual; it is the growth of the whole.

Spirit-led worship is spirit and understanding, ordered and peaceful
To the most gifted and disorderly church, Paul insists both halves belong together: 'I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also. I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.' Then he names the character of the God being worshiped: 'God is not a God of confusion, but of peace,' and gives the standing instruction: 'Let all things be done decently and in order.' Order is not the absence of the Spirit; it is one of His fruits.

Self-control is a fruit of the very Spirit leading worship
It is worth noticing that Paul lists 'self-control' among 'the fruit of the Spirit', right beside love and peace. A gathering truly led by the Spirit will therefore look less like losing control and more like controlled fire: real power, real participation, and real restraint, all at once. The Spirit who inspired the psalms also inspired the sentence that says to do everything decently and in order.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
