Why did God create us?
Not because He needed us. The God who made everything is not served by human hands 'as though he needed anything.' Creation overflows from who He is: He made us for His glory, out of love, for relationship, and so that His grace could be displayed. The story ends where creation aimed: God dwelling with His people.

Not because God needed anything
Paul says it plainly to the Athenian philosophers: 'neither is he served by men's hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself gives to all life and breath, and all things.' A God of complete fullness does not create from lack or loneliness. If we were made to meet some deficit in Him, we would be necessary; Scripture never lets us think that. Instead, everything begins from His giving.
The God who made the world and all things in it, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, doesn’t dwell in temples made with hands,
neither is he served by men’s hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself gives to all life and breath, and all things.
For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things. To him be the glory for ever! Amen.
yet to us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and we live through him.
For His glory
God gives His own motive in Isaiah: everyone called by His name was 'created for my glory.' The elders around the throne sing the same: 'you created all things, and because of your desire they existed, and were created.' This is not God fishing for compliments; it is the truth that reality has a center, and it is not us. Of Him, through Him, and to Him are all things.

“Worthy are you, our Lord and God, the Holy One, to receive the glory, the honor, and the power, for you created all things, and because of your desire they existed, and were created!”
For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things. To him be the glory for ever! Amen.
For by him all things were created, in the heavens and on the earth, things visible and things invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things have been created through him, and for him.
Out of love, for relationship
Glory and love are not rival motives; they are one. God made man 'in his own image,' capable of knowing and loving Him, and then came walking in the garden to be with the people He had made, calling, 'Where are you?' even after they fell. John gives the direction of love: 'We love him, because he first loved us.' We were not manufactured; we were wanted.

Yahweh God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?”
They heard the voice of Yahweh God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Yahweh God among the trees of the garden.
We love him, because he first loved us.
So grace could have its display
Paul traces our redemption to 'the good pleasure of his desire': God predestined us for adoption as children, 'to the praise of the glory of his grace.' A redeemed people are the showcase of what God is like; grace is why He made the world and why He saves within it. Even the new creation keeps this purpose: the story ends with 'God's dwelling... with people,' which is what the garden was always pointing toward.

And that means your life has an aim now
Because creation has a purpose, so do you. Isaiah's people were formed 'that they might declare my praise,' and Paul says we are God's workmanship, 'created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them.' You do not invent your meaning from scratch; you discover it: glorify the God who made you, enjoy Him, love what He loves, and join the work He prepared ahead of time.
