Why did David spare Saul?
Twice, while Saul hunted him through the wilderness, David held the king's life in his hand and let him walk away, because Saul was Yahweh's anointed and judgment belonged to God alone. David would not seize by force the throne God had promised by anointing oil. His refusal shows how faith waits: it trusts God's timing, refuses self-serving violence, and leaves vengeance with Him.

Twice God put Saul into David's hand
In both cave and camp, David's men saw the same opening and drew the same conclusion. At Engedi they even dressed it in promise language: 'Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it shall seem good to you.' Later Abishai volunteered to pin Saul to the earth with one stroke. The logic looked airtight both times. Yet David shows that an open door is not always God's invitation, and that faith sometimes refuses an opportunity that appears heaven-sent.
The men of David said to him, “Behold, the day of which Yahweh said to you, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it shall seem good to you.’” Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe secretly.And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the Lord said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe privily.
Then Abishai said to David, “God has delivered up your enemy into your hand this day. He would not stretch out his hand against Yahweh's anointed
David's reason was theological, not tactical. Saul was still Yahweh's anointed king, so striking him meant striking what God had consecrated: 'Yahweh forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, Yahweh's anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, since he is Yahweh's anointed.' A chapter later the principle holds even with the spear at hand, for 'who can stretch out his hand against Yahweh's anointed, and be guiltless?' God's gifts come through God's appointments, never through desecrating them.
He said to his men, “Yahweh forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, Yahweh’s anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, since he is Yahweh’s anointed.”And he said unto his men, The Lord forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the Lord’s anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the Lord.
David said to Abishai, “Don’t destroy him; for who can stretch out his hand against Yahweh’s anointed, and be guiltless?”And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his hand against the Lord’s anointed, and be guiltless?

A cut robe and a stricken conscience
Merely trimming Saul's robe wounded David more than it wounded Saul: 'David's heart struck him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt.' He treats even that small act as too near the line, and later pleads with the evidence in hand, 'there is neither evil nor disobedience in my hand, and I have not sinned against you.' Holiness for David was not a floor beneath which he managed his worst, but a ceiling he refused to approach, starting with his own heart's protests.
Afterward, David’s heart struck him, because he had cut off Saul’s skirt.And it came to pass afterward, that David’s heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul’s skirt.

He trusted God's timing instead of seizing the throne
David had been anointed years before he wore the crown, and he would wait for God to make the difference: 'As Yahweh lives, Yahweh will strike him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall go down into battle and perish.' He names three doors God could use and walks away from none of them being his own hand. His confidence rests on God's justice, that 'Yahweh will render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness,' and history vindicates the waiting.
David said, “As Yahweh lives, Yahweh will strike him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall go down into battle and perish.David said furthermore, As the Lord liveth, the Lord shall smite him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall descend into battle, and perish.

Vengeance belongs to God, so good can do its work
Before Saul left the cave, David had already stated Paul's doctrine: 'May Yahweh judge between me and you, and may Yahweh avenge me of you; but my hand shall not be on you.' Paul universalizes it for every believer: 'Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.' Because judgment is God's office, ours is blessing enemies and feeding them, until 'overcome evil with good' becomes the strategy. Peter saw the same shape in Jesus, who committed himself to him who judges righteously.
