Why did Israel keep drifting into idolatry?
Israel drifted because idolatry is not mainly an intellectual mistake but a heart disease: they wanted gods they could see, control, and use. Their story exposes how quickly delivered people forget their Deliverer, and how faithfully God sent prophets to call them home.

Idolatry promises what only God gives
Israel did not stop believing in Yahweh when they made the calf; they wanted a god they could manage, a golden figure to go before them. Idols domesticate the divine: fertility on demand, victory on demand, approval on demand. That trade, exchanging the glory of God for images, is what Paul calls the root of human unrighteousness.
When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron, and said to him, “Come, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what has become of him.”
Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and traded the glory of the incorruptible God for the likeness of an image of corruptible man, and of birds, and four-footed animals, and creeping things.
Forgetfulness precedes unfaithfulness
Judges names the mechanism: another generation arose 'who didn’t know Yahweh, nor yet the work which he had worked for Israel,' and served the Baals. Idolatry rarely attacks doctrine first; it attacks memory. Which is why Scripture keeps commanding remembrance: tell the children, keep the feasts, build the memorial stones.
Also all that generation were gathered to their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, who didn’t know Yahweh, nor yet the work which he had worked for Israel.
then beware lest you forget Yahweh, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
Every drift ends in the same dead end
The era's epitaph reads: 'every man did that which was right in his own eyes.' Autonomy sounds like freedom but produced chaos, oppression, and fear. Elijah put the alternative plainly on Carmel: 'If Yahweh is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.' Half-hearted religion satisfies no one, least of all God.
In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
Elijah came near to all the people, and said, “How long will you waver between the two sides? If Yahweh is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” The people answered him not a word.
God kept calling them back
Through drought and fire on Carmel the people fell on their faces crying, 'Yahweh, he is God!' Through prophet after prophet the Lord pleaded rather than abandoned. And He promised the cure for idolatry itself: a new heart, His law written within, so that His people would finally love Him with an undivided heart.
When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces. They said, “Yahweh, he is God! Yahweh, he is God!”
But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says Yahweh: I will put my law in their inward parts, and in their heart will I write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people:
I will also give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh.
